Now, four races deep into the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, Clark has taken a third-place finish at his hometown track in Las Vegas and at 20 years old has joined the ranks of young SuperLite racers who are pushing the limits of off-road truck racing in stadiums across the country.
Clark’s style is smooth and methodical, but peppered with the aggressive moves necessary to gain and hold position in the relentless frenzy of a SuperLite race.
“I can drive more aggressive, but I am methodical,” said Clark. “I like clean racing, but I will hit any jump as hard as I can.”
Clark loves the tactics of SuperLite racing, which pit a competitor’s wits as well as pure driving skill against challengers. And the endurance and patience required on the dirt track contrasts with the blink-and-you-miss-it brevity of drag racing.
“Drag racing is over in a couple seconds. In SuperLite, each time you go through the same corner it is different. With asphalt it is the exact same. In off-road racing you have to think more,” said Clark.
Since he does not own a SuperLite truck, Clark has been racing this season with SuperLite Racing’s “Arrive and Drive” program. The truck and crew are all provided to him ready to drive, and he just shows up at each race, puts his hands on the steering wheel and his foot on the gas pedal and races.
But after this season, with some experience on the podium and the realization that he will be off-road racing well into the future, Clark plans to either buy or rent a truck for the entire 2011 season .
“I know I want to be in the dirt,” said Clark. “That is what I love.”
Clark’s entrance into SuperLite racing this year matches him up with an exciting class of young guns — racers like Dawson Kirchner, Chad George and Wyatt Kirchner — who are putting up impressive wins and battling to adrenaline-fueled, crowd-pleasing finishes.
“The talent in that class is just stacked,” said Clark. “Myself and the other young racers on the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series have been honing and molding our racing skills since we were very young kids, and we hit the track with a lot of energy.”
With a full season of SuperLite racing ahead of him in 2011, Clark will continue to throttle through corners and fly through jumps, seeking a regular spot on the podium and working toward his bright future racing on dirt.
